Search engine optimization can feel overwhelming, but most small business websites do not need complicated tactics to start ranking. They need the basics done properly and consistently. Use this SEO checklist to find quick wins and build a strong foundation for long-term organic traffic.
Part 1: Technical SEO basics
Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, crawl and understand your website.
- Use HTTPS. Your site should load on
https:// with a valid SSL certificate and no browser warnings.
- Create an XML sitemap. Plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast generate one automatically. Submit it in Google Search Console.
- Check robots.txt. Make sure you are not accidentally blocking important pages, and that it points to your sitemap.
- Fix broken links and 404 errors. Redirect old URLs to the most relevant live page with 301 redirects.
- Use clean URLs.
/services/web-design/ is better than /?page_id=123.
- Be mobile-friendly. Google mainly uses the mobile version of your site for indexing, so test every important page on a phone.
Part 2: Site speed and page experience
- Compress images and use modern formats such as WebP.
- Keep plugins to the ones you actually need.
- Use good hosting and a current PHP version.
- Test key pages with PageSpeed Insights and fix the largest issues first.
Faster pages help rankings indirectly and conversions directly, because visitors stay instead of bouncing.
Part 3: Keyword research
Every important page should target a clear topic that real customers search for.
- List the services you sell and the problems you solve.
- Write down how a customer would describe them in their own words.
- Check search demand with free tools like Google Search Console, Google autocomplete and “People also ask”.
- Choose one main keyword per page, plus a few close variations.
Avoid targeting the same keyword with several pages. That makes your own pages compete with each other.
Part 4: On-page SEO
For each important page, check the following:
- Title tag: unique, around 50 to 60 characters, includes the main keyword and your brand.
- Meta description: about 120 to 155 characters that clearly explain the benefit and invite the click.
- One H1: a single main heading that matches the page topic.
- Logical subheadings: H2 and H3 headings that organize the content.
- Helpful content: answer the questions a customer has before buying, in plain language.
- Image alt text: describe images for accessibility and image search.
- Internal links: link related pages together so visitors and Google can find them.
Part 5: Structured data
Structured data (schema markup) helps search engines understand who you are and what you offer. At a minimum, add:
- Organization schema with your name, logo and contact details
- Service schema on service pages
- Article or BlogPosting schema on blog posts
- FAQ content on pages where customers have common questions
Test your pages with Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm the markup is valid.
Part 6: Content that earns traffic
Service pages bring in people who are ready to buy. Blog content brings in people who are still researching, and helps your site build topical authority. A simple plan:
- Publish one or two genuinely useful articles per month.
- Answer real questions your customers ask in emails and calls.
- Link each article to the most relevant service page.
- Update older posts when information changes instead of letting them go stale.
Part 7: Local and trust signals
Even if you serve clients internationally, trust matters. Make sure you have:
- A clear About page and real contact details
- A Privacy Policy, especially if you collect information through forms
- Reviews or testimonials from real clients
- Consistent business details on your website, social profiles and any directories you use
- A Google Business Profile, if you serve customers in a specific location
Part 8: Measure and improve
SEO is a continuous process. Each month, open Google Search Console and look at:
- Which pages and queries get impressions and clicks
- Pages with many impressions but a low click-through rate, which may need better titles
- Indexing errors or pages that are “Discovered but not indexed”
Small, regular improvements add up. Most websites see meaningful results within three to six months of consistent work.
